The A.P.O.L. was founded in 1978 as a not-for-profit corporation.
The membership, whose bands are heard at thousands of public venues, festivals,
socials, corporate and charity events annually, includes most of the Chicago's
prominent and successful bandleaders. Guided by the APOL Code of Ethics
and Profession Standards, the organization encourages the highest values
of professionalism and musical excellence.
The A.P.O.L's monthly meetings serve as forums for the free exchange
of matters of musical concern to its members, including music and musicianship,
business practices, client and employee relations, sales and marketing
and new technology. The organization strives to educate the public regarding
the value of live musical entertainment and professional orchestras.
In 1998 the A.P.O.L. established a Musical Scholarship Fund. Each fall
and spring a committee selects a qualified college music student to receive
an unrestricted cash award.
In 2000 the A.P.O.L. agreed to underwrite, in part, jazz programming
on Saturday mornings on WDCB 90.9 FM. This yearlong commitment is acknowledged
every Saturday morning at 9:20 am.
The annual dinner dance is the major fundraiser of the organization that
is open to both the membership and the public. Past events have featured
the big bands of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman and Count Basie.
