Brian Smith: Brian is and 18-year old senior at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois who is planning to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana in the fall of 2011 as a music major on saxophones and voice.
He has studied voice privately for 5 years, appeared as a soloist, arranged a piece for acappella choir and sung in IMEA district choruses in 2009 and 2010. Brian has also had parts in 6 musicals at York, acted in 4 in a lead capacity and was secretary of the drama board.
Instrumentally he has studied alto saxophone for a total of 9 years with three of York’s instrumental music instructors and performed several major concerti in four annual recitals. He has played in several jazz ensembles and was a drum major for the York marching and pep bands.
For three seasons, Brian has attended the Blue Lake Fine Arts summer camp and was part of their international ensemble that traveled to Germany, Denmark, Luxembourg and Sweden. He has also mentored 4th through 7th grade students through the Elmhurst school district Buddy Program. In 2010 he was a member of the York Marching Band which played halftime at the Sugar Bowl in Memphis.
His scholarship audition materials demonstrated a wide variety of musical skills both instrumentally and vocally. We of the APOL are pleased to encourage someone like Brian who is keeping up leadership and live music presentations as a part of our country’s musical mosaic.
